For more than a decade, North Beach Jazz Fest was the Soul of San Francisco. Created by jazz aficionados Alistair Monroe and Herve Ernest, and managed by Sunset Promotions, the festival celebrated the rich cultural heritage of North Beach. Featuring concerts in Washington Square, Coit Tower and the many clubs and bars of North Beach, NBJF was a local institution. Hundreds of bands, artists, djs and poets graced the stages over the years including such legends as Carlos Santana, Bobby Hutcherson, Pancho Sanchez, the Headhunters, Roy Ayers, Pharoah Sanders, Pucho & his Latin Soul Brothers, Rebirth Brass Band, Kermit Ruffins, the Dakah Hip Hop Orchestra, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, John Cleary & the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, Bitter:Sweet, the Breakestra, all of the many sides of The Jazz Mafia and frequent festival residents Mingus Amungus and Marcus Shelby.
North Beach Jazz is on an indefinite hiatus.
