The Challenge: Keeping Live Music Alive During COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill in the spring of 2020. Businesses closed, travel stopped, and people were confined to their homes. While some sectors of the economy recovered quickly, the live event industry faced a major crisis. Without safe public gatherings, live events were impossible, threatening the industry’s very existence.
HUSHconcerts, North America’s leading provider of wireless headphone technology for events, had the experience to adapt to this challenge. They knew that their technology could help maintain social distancing, but they needed a solution that could work for larger audiences. The answer was to use FM radio to transmit audio to attendees in their vehicles, creating a “drive-in concert” experience.
But there were obstacles. FM radio frequencies are heavily regulated, and many cities, including Burlingame, California, had limited availability. Additionally, the FCC’s power output restrictions made it difficult to reach a large enough audience to make drive-in concerts financially viable.
The Solution: HUSHfm and the Bayshore Concert Series
HUSHconcerts partnered with the City of Burlingame and the production company Hotbox to create the Bayshore Concert Series, a series of drive-in concerts held at the Burlingame Golf Center. The venue offered stunning views and ample space, but the proximity to San Francisco International Airport and several AAA radio stations made finding an open FM frequency difficult.
To overcome this, HUSHconcerts developed a hybrid RF solution using a distributed network of FM transmitters, all operating within FCC guidelines. They chained these transmitters together wirelessly using their Silent Conference transmitters and receivers. This allowed them to fill the entire area with FM radio without exceeding legal limits, ensuring that the broadcast remained within the event site.
The Result: A Safe and Successful Concert Series
The Bayshore Concert Series was a resounding success. It featured a diverse lineup of artists, including Thundercat, Diplo, Major Lazer, and Marc Rebillet. The series provided much-needed entertainment for the community during a difficult time and helped bring live music back to the Bay Area.
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, HUSHconcerts was able to create a safe and successful concert series. Their innovative use of technology and their commitment to respecting the community’s concerns ensured that the Bayshore Concert Series was a resounding success.
